Nana Patekar and Prakash Jha had a major showdown on the sets of Rajneeti in Bhopal, with the latter refusing to working with Nana ever again.
Nana, who plays an integral role in Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti, threw a fit on the sets when Jha refused to modify his scene according to his tastes. Jha tried his very best to calm Nana down, but he just wasn’t ready to understand. A source on the sets revealed, “The entire situation on the set got completely out of hand. Everybody was shocked at Nana’s behaviour; he had been throwing tantrums since morning. He wanted to do the scene his way and wanted Prakash to modify it then and there. When Jha didn’t agree, he started using foul language and abused the director and the crew present. He then suddenly said he didn’t want to work with Prakash and stormed out of the sets, demanding flight tickets back to Mumbai. He felt that would make Jha listen to his demand, but Jha nonchalantly handed his tickets to him. Nana was shocked and even asked him how he’d shoot his scenes without him, and Prakash was so angry with him that he deleted all of Nana's scenes and shot with the other actors.”
Jha didn’t want Nana’s unprofessional behaviour get to him or affect his film’s progress. He simply began shooting with the other actors in order to cover Nana’s scenes. Jha, when asked about the entire situation said, ‘I have always treated Nana like family. He is a very temperamental guy. I always believed that if one person in the family is hot-tempered, the others shouldn’t follow suit. When Nana speaks, he does not realise how abusive he gets and how he humiliates people. I am the only one who can calm him down.’ This, however, isn't the first time Nana and Jha have had their differences. The director has always let his irrational behaviour pass him by, but this time, he came to a point when he couldn’t take no more. Nana later realised his mistake and even apologised to Jha, to which he said, ‘Nana has been calling me (after the fight), and I spoke to him on Saturday. He told me that he was sorry and was feeling very bad. I feel sad too, but what’s done is done. I will always pray to God for Nana’s well-being, but for me, the professional and personal relationship is over.’
It's little wonder that so few filmmakers want to cast the hot-headed actor in their films, when Nana is in the mood to call the shots.
