Just two films old, Mugdha believes in experimenting with her characters, “Being a newcomer, I have to prove my worth as an actor by experimenting with different roles and looks.” Her first film
Fashion directed by Madhur Bhandarkar had her essaying the role of the street-smart model Janice, after which she took upon the role of the sweet and innocent Vidya in
All The Best. Now Mugdha teams up with Bhandarkar again for the forthcoming
Jail, an expose about life behind bars. So how does she mould herself in the characters? She says, “It’s the script that helps me learn the attributes of my character along with the director’s vision. Madhur and I share a great bond, and I feel at ease while working with him. He helps me get into the skin of the character.”
In
Jail, Mugdha plays Maansi, Neil’s girlfriend. She speaks of her character, saying, “Maansi is a very strong and independent woman. When
Neil is faced with a situation leading him behind bars, she is his only ray of hope and reason to go on. Their bond only deepens during their tough period together and she becomes his strongest support system.” When asked if she faced any physical or mental difficulties during the shooting of the film, she adds, “It was indeed difficult shooting for the film. It pained me to see the situation in which the inmates were. Freedom seems so realistic when you are faced in such situations. It was more of an emotional thing, but you learn to cope with it.”
The actress also sports a very simple look in the film. “My appearance in
Jail is a stark contrast to what I was in
All the Best. I wore glamorous clothes in
All the Best , while in
Jail, I sport simple cotton kurtis and salwar kameezes. The colours aren’t as loud or bright, but very much in tune with the mood of the film.” Mugdha also had a lovemaking scene in the film, which the censors did away with, and the actress has no qualms about it. "While I did have my apprehensions, the scene was very tastefully shot and well handled." After
Jail, Mugdha is again treading on uncharted waters by doing a horror film. "As I said earlier, I want to do different things and experiment with different roles. The film's script excited me, and I didn't want the opportunity to pass me by."
Way to go girl!
