Aki Narula gave us young, vibrant and wearable fashion in
Bachna Ae Haseeno
, gorgeous patialas and kurtas in
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Kambakkht Ishq

Dostana
. Now he is all set to start new trends with his realistic, wearable and affordable styling in the highly-anticipated
Kurbaan
.
In an exclusive tête-à-tête with StarBoxOffice, the maverick designer gives us the lowdown on everybody’s look in
Kurbaan

Karan knew I could pull off the glamourous
Dostana
and the intense
Kurbaan
The movie starts off on a happy note but forty-five minutes into the movie, everyone’s look goes through a change when the movie becomes dark. It came about with Karan Johar offering me Kurbaan in February 2009. We started working on it in May-June. Karan was very clear that I would not be styling only Saif, Kareena and Vivek; that I would be styling the entire film including Om Puri, Kirron Kher Dia and costume direct and supervise the styling of supporting cast members comprising Nauheed Cyrusi, Hakim, Salma, Anju even though there was a secondary designer. He wanted it all to be under my wings; being in-charge of the colours. We all got off on the same platform that it had to be extremely real as the script is very powerful. All the characters, Saif’s Ehsaan and Kareena’s Avantika for instance, have character graphs that had to reflect in their clothes.
The script is God for me. The clothes need to belong to the characters and that is the only way to make it look credible and real. I worked on a few presentations for the Delhi chapter. We all agreed that we would show very little colour in Delhi and just a little in New York when they move. When the pace of the movie becomes dark and intense, that is when the colours also change. We shot in very cold conditions in New York and Philadelphia so we wanted to stick to browns, grey, navy blue and black for everybody as it is hardcore winter.
I have to thank Karan because he had enough faith and foresight to know I could pull off something intense and serious like Kurbaan. He knew I could do the glamourous
Dostana
and that I also had the capability to do
Kurbaan
. He had it in his headspace that my headspace could pull off
Kurbaan
, which is the biggest compliment that I have received.
