Hansie: Story of Hansie Cronje

Frans Cronje, brother of late South African captain Hansie Cronje has finished the movie based on his brother's life. The movie, Hansie, will be released across on Africa on September 24 with plans for an international release in talks.

Francois Rautenbach, a South African actor will play the disgraced cricketer in the movie which has been produced by the Cape Town based Global Creative Sudios. Frans, said he did not use cricketers in the movie as it is primarily a drama. Former county player and his brother-in-law Gordon Parsons assisted him in filming the cricket parts of the movie.

The film's DVD set will include a special documentary on Hansie and will feature interviews with his family, team-mates and friends. Making appearances will be Jonty Rhodes, Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, Peter Pollock, Andrew Hudson, Gary Kirsten and Kevin Pietersen.

Shooting for the movie was spread across South Africa, England and India which will see "the internal journey from stardom to losing everything and then the journey to rebuilding his life". Cronje was one of post apartheid era South Africa's leading role models till the match fixing scam was exposed. He fell rapidly and was in the process of rebuilding his life when he died in a plane crash in 2002.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) gave their "official endorsement and support" for the movie but not before Joubert Strydom, then convener of selectors, was given access to the screenplay "to ensure that the story is told with integrity". "The International Cricket Council (ICC) were happy for us to continue, knowing that the CSA endorsed it," Frans said. "I think they were happy to see that we did not choose to try and uncover any more match-fixing dirt. Rather, we chose to tell the story of Hansie's internal journey."
