It’s not just Indian beauty queens who get a shot at Bollywood stardom. Jacqueline Fernandes, Miss Sri Lanka 2007 makes her debut in Sujoy Ghosh’s Aladin, as Jasmine, opposite Ritesh Deshmukh. The former TV reporter also shares screen spaces with Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the genie in the film. Did you ever dream of being in Bollywood? Not at all, though I am a big fan of Bollywood films. But when I win the Miss Sri Lanka contest, I got this offer from Sujoy Ghosh. I have seen Jhankar Beats, so don’t want to miss the chance. What did Sujoy brief you about your character? I have watched Aladin cartoons as a child and it was one of my favourite stories. When Sujoy told me about my character, it really felt like a fantasy character. But this Jasmine is a little different from the ones we have seen till now. Was it difficult to work with new people? It wasn’t difficult as my director and co-star were very supportive. Ritesh and I had a great time while shooting. Sometimes, when I can’t actually say the correct word and we had to take many takes, he never got bored or irritated. I remember when I had a shot with Amitabh sir, I just couldn’t do it, but they were calm that I managed to get it right.
